  • 1MR : One Maximum Repetition. To train qualities of force using additional resistance, 1MR is equivalent to the maximum resistance that one person can move, for one repetition. A resistance equivalent to 7MR means that the person can move this resistance only 7 times before being forced to stop from exhaustion.

  • Macrocycle or Mesocycle : Period of the training calendar composed of several microcycles/weeks of training

  • Maximum effort percentage : Value corresponding to a percentage selected from maximum effort (% of best time, maximum speed, etc.). In the context of a strength exercise using dead weights or equipment, the title % of 1RM is more appropriate.

  • Maximum aerobic power : Also called VO2max, maximum oxygen consumption, cardiovascular stamina, this term denotes the power of work which can be generated from the almost exclusive use of the aerobic energy system during exercise which can be sustained for between 3 and 10 minutes. A high VO2max. is crucial for performance in sports lasting between 3 and 10 minutes.

  • Max H.R : Maximum heart rate registered during an exercise which has led to exhaustion after 2 to 3 minutes. Maximum heart rate is dependant on the type of exercise used (the max H.R. during a test on a cycling machine is different from the max H.R. obtained during a test in a race). Maximum heart rate can also be estimated (with a non-negligible margin of error) by the formula 220-AGE. Maximum heart rate lowers with age.

  • Maximum strength : Amount of muscular force which can be generated by an individual, in a single activity leading to exhaustion, for a given exercise and independent of body weight. Synonym : 1MR.

  • Mental fatigue : Individual and subjective perception of a person's state of psychological fatigue. A high level of mental fatigue means that the person is subject to stress, perhaps due to bad recuperation after training, or events in his private life. If the level of mental fatigue is very high for 2 to 3 days in succession, a reduction in training load or a rest day is recommended. It is also recommended to discuss with the athlete the possible causes of this fatigue. A high level of mental stress has a negative influence on performance and is often a precursor to over training and associated problems. In order to evaluate accurately the state of mental fatigue, it should be measured every day at the same time.

  • Microcycle : Period of the training calendar composed of several days of training followed by 1 to 2 days of rest..

  • Model session : The basic element of training programmes. A model session contains several exercises and an initial load (series, repetitions, etc.), which serves as a basis for load calculations. A model session can contain an unlimited quantity of exercises.

  • Motivation Level : Individual and subjective perception of a person's state of motivation. A high level of motivation has a positive influence on performance and should be encouraged. A low level of motivation can lead to a lowering in the quality of training (and of performance ability) and is often the symptom of problems being. faced by that person (family, financial, school problems, etc.). In order to evaluate accurately the state of motivation, it should be measured every day at the same time.

  • Muscular power : The product of force generated and speed of movement.
